The history of the Marine and Port Services of the Division is intricately linked to the rise of Port Louis as the leading harbour of the region. Port Louis, the only seaport of Mauritius, has been a strategic transit point for ships operating in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region for centuries.

Increasing transactions between these two regions towards the mid- nineteenth century led to the rise of marine and port services in Mauritius to ensure the repair and maintenance of ships venturing in the Indian Ocean. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Taylor Smith business was created to provide these services.

Withstanding the passage of time, Taylor Smith & Co Ltd has constantly adapted to keep pace with change. Today, it operates two "dry docks" and two repair berths.

Throughout a century of existence, Taylor Smith & Co Ltd has acquired internationally recognised expertise and know-how. The company offers a repair service adapted to each category of ships as well as the general maintenance of vessels. Its clients include french military ships, merchant  and fishing vessels.
