The Taylor Smith Group came into being on the 1st January 1908 with the registration of the partnership of : Taylor Smith & Co, Taylor & Smith and Port Louis Water Supply Co. A new Era had begun. The partnership was formed by Alexander Taylor, George Anderson Smith, Jack Gordon Smith and Douglas Ernest Pearmain.
Alexander Taylor was a skilled shipwright, George Smith a Banker and Financer, Jack Smith a certified Board of Trade Engineer and Shipbuilder and Douglas Pearmain a qualified electrical engineer. This close knit and edicated team worked arduously and successfully together, shortly after World War One, when the two sons of Alexander Taylor, George Taylor and Duncan Alexander Taylor joined the Group.
Taylor Smith & Co took over the Sole Dry Dock in Mauritius. At the dissolution of the Docks & Ships Company, the Albion Dock carried on with the operation until February 1914, when Taylor Smith & Co took it over and successfully operated and developed the Stevenson Dry Dock and Patent Shipways right up to the present times.
The Stevedoring activities of Taylor Smith steadily expanded over the years and included contracts with the main Shipping Companies trading in Mauritius.
In order to preserve and further develop good labour relation and general efficiency of the port operation as whole, the entire Taylor Smith Group together with other Port Operators, formed the first association of employers in Mauritius.
Alexander Taylor, the principal founder of the Group, died aged 73 on the 27 April 1929 at his home at Curepipe, leaving behind a soundly based Group of Companies and a solid foundation for the future expansion of the Group.
Still going strong, The Taylor Smith Group took the important step of joining Rogers & Co ltd and Blyth Brothers & Co Ltd in 1952, in founding the tourist industry in Mauritius. Thus, creating the Mauritius Hotels Ltd. The Family Business continued to flourish with the arrival of Derek James Taylor, son of Percy Taylor, in 1961.
From the 1950’s to the 1970’s, the Port Louis Harbour had built up a reputation for efficiency and was recognized as one of the world’s fastest dispatching ports. The Group continued to expand and diversify its investments in various industries, until it joined the Rogers Group and Taylor Smith Holdings was registered in 1973.
On the 27th January 1984, Derek Taylor, who was already a Director of Rogers & Co Ltd replaced Christian Coucaud as Chief Executive Director of The Rogers Group. Sir Emile Series as Chairman and Derek Taylor as Chief Executive had taken over the reins of Rogers Group at a difficult period. Rogers had suffered a loss of Rs38 millions in 1981, Rs2 millions in 1982, making a modest profit of Rs7 millions in 1983. Important changes took place in the structure of the board of Directors and management following general survey. Action was taken on style of management, methods of financial control etc, with a view to improving morale and maximizing profits. The Espitalier Noel, Weal & Taylor Smith Groups co-operated together closely to ensure that The Rogers Group was geared to play its full part in contributing to the improving state of the Island’s Economy. The Rogers Group has confirmed to grow and expand its activities and in 1999 when Derek Taylor retired, Tim Taylor was appointed as Chief Executive Officer.
On the 1st October 2004, Taylor Smith holdings purchased from Rogers eight businesses from the Engineering division, namely :

- Somim Ltd
- Water Research Co Ltd
- AEL DDS Ltd
- Mauritius Molasses Co Ltd
- Aqualia DPI Ltd
- Kaylor Rotomoulders
- HSDL
Since then, The Taylor Smith Group began operations on its own, having separated from The Rogers Group on mutually agreed terms.
